For the first Lit Circle my group decided that we would start by reading the first three chapters of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie. The book is about a teacher from North Carolina who went to grew up in a integrated community and moved to Chicago where he found that although the city is diverse the communities and schools are very segregated. In the first chapter he writes about his first year as a teacher and some of the struggles he had faced while teaching kids of a different culture. In the second and third chapters he writes about how the time he spent in he is second year of teaching and in a different school with Latino students as opposed to the African American students he taught the previous year. I really enjoyed the first few chapters and I am very interested in how the rest of his journey is shown in the book because I am wondering how he will use his experiences from the various students and how he will be able to shift his approach to the students when necessary.
